An Interview by Maggie Lau (248 Days of School 2014)
Agnes Tsang a year one Art Administration student is one of the minority active art practitioners in class. In this exhibition (248 Days of School) apart from assisting in art administrative work, Agnes presents three paintings of abstract art style in her capacity as an art practitioner.
Interviewer : Could you elaborate on the theme and idea of your artwork ?
Agnes:I was prompted by immense curiosity in 2012 about “sleep”. I have been making researches into the stages of developing into the state of deep sleep after falling asleep, and also the relative response the body gives when making dreams.
An artwork under the theme “Sleep is a gate between the conscious and the unconscious” was initiated, through which I became acquainted with a range of people I conducted interviews with. With their consent, I recorded their individual patterns of sleep, and their experience in dreams by video or in writing after they woke up.
Re-constructing of a dream fixed the stress people experienced in that.
Good dreams and bad dreams were put down as part of my artwork. I also recorded my own dreams.
Between 2012 and 2013 I have participated in various exhibitions under the theme “sleep”. From late 2013 through the past months in 2014, I have been in touch with some children and adults in the course of my work. I have tried to learn from them of their interpretation of fine art and abstract paintings. I have also recorded the colors, words, musical sounds and images they experienced in dreams. From what I gathered, I have extracted the elements I need and produced this new series of artwork totally fourteen pieces, from which I select three for this exhibition. I regard this series as a new and fundamental unit of the whole artwork.
Interviewer : How many interviews have you conducted since pursuing this artwork ?
Agnes:I have interviewed around 60 people since 2012. During the long observation period not all the interviewees had dreams, however most of them had dreams at a particular period of time.
Interviewer : What makes this series different from your previous artwork ?
Agnes:In my previous works have I mainly practised the performing arts with photo-taking and video-making.
In the current series, I have tried to create abstract paintings depicting the Bible verses dreamt about, as well as colors and things experienced in dreams. The medium, tone and the methodology used in the present series are widely varied from the preceding works.
Interviewer : What was the impulse behind the creation of abstract paintings and the application of this medium ?
Agnes:Initially, I have found some interviewees who are unfamiliar with one another unable to express the colors or words they dreamt about by performance or video. I only relied on drawings to record their ideas. Confronted with the unattainability by photographic images of some dreams, I have eventually converted the colors or words which could not be recorded by performance nor video into interviewees’ using drawing tools in expression of the images they dreamt about to fulfill their direct participation in my artwork.
Meanwhile, I am teaching visual arts in a primary school to a class of elite students. During our interactions, I have tried to explore the abstract art painting. The students probably have not the slightest idea of abstract painting, nor fine art however the works they produced are in fact a piece of artwork. I have in mind an excitement and a strong passion to traverse hands-on experience to deepen my knowledge of abstract art paintings.
